Scheduled Outage Requires Welding and Fabrication

Challenge

Power Plant Needs Quick Turn Around

A large power generation facility in Homer City needed preventative maintenance performed on 162 pieces of equipment. The parts had to be uninstalled, repaired and then reinstalled in less than a week. They searched for a company who could not only meet their tight deadline, but also prevent the warping that often occurs with welding.

Solution

Miller Devises Plan

First, MWM addressed the quality concerns. They knew welding would cause the pieces to bow, they just didn’t know to what extent. The only way to produce straight pieces would be to make a few test pieces to discover where the warping would occur. Once that was determined, they built the tooling to accommodate for this bowing. Spending this time preparing for the job resulted in high quality pieces that were straight; absolutely no warping.

Once they knew they could produce high quality parts, it was time to focus on the deadline. They pulled extra resources from within the organization and devoted overtime to the project.

Results

Miller Exceeds Client’s Expectations

It was a Thursday when MWM went to the power generation facility to pick up the parts. Instead of specifying an exact deadline, the customer simply requested that 48 parts be returned ‘early next week.’ Miller had 55 parts delivered that Monday. All of the maintenance was completed on schedule.
